Believe me when I say it is difficult to sleep in a labor room!
Throughout the night, my sleep was at most 1hr straight. The excitement of seeing my daughter face-to-face, the anxiety of seeing my wife undergo ceasarean delivery without me by her side (the doctor did not allow me to be with her once they "open" her up and the frequent visits of the nurse, interns, etc in our room.
At 630AM, my dad arrived with some breakfast for me. Sandwhich and coffee. Oh yeah... I need to eat.
This is it. Joanna was transferred to the delivery room. I was in a scrub suit ready to beg the doctor so I can stay with Joanna in the delivery room. We took pictures just to lighten up the mood. The doctor arrived and I was asked to step out. The senior nurse volunteered to take the pictures.
Joel accompanied me. "Don't worry, in a few minutes you will see your daughter. Be ready to follow her into the nursery." So I was outside with other fathers and relatives waiting.
5 minutes.... 10 minutes... 15 minutes... "MR. ELMER MEDALLA!" As I entered I saw the head nurse holding my baby.
"Ikaw po ba si Elmer Medalla?" the nurse asked.
"Opo.", I answered.
She handed her to me. I was scared on how to carry her. She was so small, so delicate. But somehow, she just fell into place as I placed my arms around her. She was beautiful. She is all that I imagined her to be. She was crying, she was chilling, maybe feeling cold being out of her mother's womb.
"O picture na!", Joel exclaimed. He was ready to take our picture... it was great! Then the nurse asked for ianna since she will be brought to the nursery. "just follow me to the nursery but use the elevator", she said.
